They were obliged to accept the captain’s invitation to dinner that evening; it was all part of their cover. But despite the danger, in some ways it felt like a game. Kiku exchanged her black evening gown for a red one, while Takeo continued his man-in-black look.

As for Jimmy, Kiku didn’t know if he was just getting into the role or if he was destined to wear a bow tie and glasses, but he was rocking the look and performing the hip manager act to perfection. And, from the attention he was receiving from some of the women in the dining room and his obvious enjoyment, it appeared he was rethinking his original negative assessment of his makeover.

The captain started the dinner by asking a lot of questions about Classical Warfare, but Kiku deftly steered the subject to a nautical discussion; she knew people preferred to talk about themselves. Soon everyone at the table was busy chatting away about their own lives—everyone except the honored guests.

After dinner, Kiku was about to excuse herself and return to the cabin when the captain made a not entirely unexpected request.

“If I may be so presumptuous, we’d love to hear you both perform,” he said.

Before Kiku could politely decline the invitation, Takeo announced, “Love to.” He finished his third whiskey sour and set the glass down on the table with a loud click.

Kiku’s face remained a neutral mask as she stared at Takeo. What happened to avoiding this at all costs? She cursed herself once again for giving Takeo the Roy Orbison sunglasses. She couldn’t see his eyes, and therefore had no clue what he was thinking.

Grinning roguishly and reminding her of his uncle Daichi, Takeo rose from his chair.

The captain smiled broadly. “Wonderful.”

Jimmy kicked Kiku’s foot under the table, leaned over, and whispered into her ear, “Do something.”

All the options for stopping Takeo—including punching him in the nose—raced through her mind, but they were derailed by an overriding question: What is he up to? Like a spectator watching a race car crash, she was transfixed, wanting to see the outcome and unable to look away.

“I am sorry, but I have a bit of a sore throat, Rin,” she said, smiling thinly. “You know how I get when I don’t drink enough water. Let’s go back to our suite and sip something warm, out on the balcony.” She added the last part as a not-so-veiled threat.

“I’m sorry to hear that,” the captain said with a frown. Kiku picked up on the suspicion in his eyes.

“No worries!” Takeo bowed politely to the table. “It looks like this will have to be a solo performance.”

Jimmy kicked Kiku again, and she pinned his foot to the floor with her high heel. Jimmy ground his teeth and let out a stifled whimper.

“Are you okay, Mr. Sano?” asked the waiter filling Kiku’s water glass.

“Fine.” Jimmy cleared his throat. “I’m just wishing I’d thought to sell tickets. I could have made a bundle.”

A chuckle flittered around the table as Takeo strolled over to the grand piano, where a man sat playing soft background music.
